Common Ailments Scheme

Your community pharmacist can offer free confidential NHS advice and/or treatments for a number of common health problems without you having to make an appointment with your GP (for example – conjunctivitis, indigestion and dermatitis.)

Please consider contacting your local community pharmacist prior to contacting a doctor where appropriate.  A list of common ailments covered by the scheme and age restrictions is available here.

Choose Pharmacy is a confidential NHS electronic records system which community pharmacists use to record details of NHS services they provide you with.

Living Well Programme:

The Living Life Well Programme runs taught courses called ‘Stress Control’, ‘Activate your Life’, ‘Introduction to Mindfulness’ and ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’.

Taught courses are delivered in a lecture style (not a group therapy); as such, they contain no discussion of personal problems. This allows people who feel uncomfortable talking in front of others to attend without any concerns; however, you are more than welcome to speak to the facilitators of the course either during the break or at the end of the sessions if you have any questions.

Physiotherapy:

Referrals for local outpatient physiotherapy can be accessed via:

  • Self-referral – telephone physio direct referral service or paper self-referral form.
  • Direct referral from GP Surgery, Hospital Consultants or other health care professionals.

Click here for more information on the above.

Phlebotomy:

During COVID19 our local phlebotomy services in the Swansea Bay University Health Board have changed.

Gorseinon Hospital isn’t currently providing a phlebotomy service.

You can now pre-book an appointment for a blood test at Morriston Hospital and the Bay Field Hospital via this link.

If you are unable to access online booking please telephone: 01792 601807 between 9am and 4pm.

You will need to attend with the completed blood test request form from the surgery or hospital clinic.

Podiatry:

If you need advice for any foot-related problem and you are not currently a patient with the Podiatry Department there are two ways in which you may access them:

#1: Attend the Podiatry walk-in clinic at Port Talbot Resource Centre.  The benefit of attending the walk-in clinic without an appointment is that it includes a face-to-face assessment by a podiatrist.

Treatment may also be provided where appropriate.

Port Talbot Resource Centre Level 1, Moor Road, Baglan, SA12 7BJ

Opening hours:  Monday – Friday 8.45am – 3.00pm  (closed Bank Holidays)

#2: Contact Podiatry Direct.  This is a telephone service to provide direct access for advice and assessment of foot-related problems. You will speak with a podiatrist who will discuss your foot health needs and offer specialist advice.  You will also be offered an appointment where appropriate.

Telephone: 0300 300 0024

Monday to Friday 8.45am – 4.15pm (closed bank holidays).
